Editor's Letter #15

Author Garance Doré
Happy New Year, Happy New Year, Happy New Yeeeaaaaar!!!!I don’t know about you, but I feel like 2016 is going to be an amazing year. Yep, I’m sure of it. So hey, no need to even make any resolutions.Besides, if I had decided to make some, I would have had a bit of a problem: my first idea for 2016 was to not go out on New Year’s Eve so I could start the year feeling great and I could reflect on my intentions for the new year, but I ended up drunk in the streets of New York at 4 in the morning instead.Off to a great start, right? And since then, I’ve been too busy to reflect on my personal development (haha), but now, this third of January, 2016, I’m finally lying on a beach (the beach — the perfect place to think about your life) with a margarita (margaritas — the perfect cocktail for not thinking about your life) so I can finally share with you all my wishes for 2016.I warn you, it’s slightly cheesy, but if you stick with me to the end of the post, I promise to tell you about something pretty crazy. So here we go.The most important thing I’ve learned recently is that what matters more than anything else is the attitude you decide to have when faced with the difficulties life throws at us (even the most benign ones, like the stupid bug that bit my leg last night so that now I am at the beach with one perfectly smooth, perfectly shaved leg, while the other looks like steak tartare). In 2015, as much as possible, I tried to respond to challenges with a smile and a positive attitude, rather than letting myself wallow in worry and anxiety. And I realized that changes absolutely everything. So I would like to try to continue to cultivate that attitude.Even with my body — one of the first places where it’s important for women to cultivate peace and love. Because once you’ve found that peace, you’re free to think about more important things than “should I have ordered those churros last night” (have you noticed the Mexican theme of this post? Yep, I’m on vacation in Mexico). And that doesn’t mean getting the super skinny body you’re “supposed to have right now” or fitting into established guidelines, not at all.Just finding your own balance, accepting yourself, and being good to yourself. In 2015, I still didn’t totally fulfill that goal, but on the other hand, I found lots of girls who inspire me a lot – on Instagram, in particular. Bailey Rebecca Roberts and her magnificent curves, who we often photograph for the blog, and others like Hannah Bronfman and her super athletic body. No need to stick to ideals to be beautiful, as long as you accept yourself and assert yourself. The moment you believe in yourself, the whole world will believe in you too, I promise, it sounds corny, but it’s really like a magic formula.Oh, and speaking of Instagram and social media – I spent a good part of last year complaining (well yeah, I’m French, you can’t get us to stop complaining just like that!) about the frantic rhythms and impossible ideals we submit ourselves to when we’re constantly confronted with the fake perfect lives of others, but now I think it’s up to us to turn that into a tool for inspiration rather than feeling pressured. Unfollow accounts that stress you out and focus on the ones that motivate you in a positive way.Inspiration should be a tool for self confidence, not something that oppresses us.Anyway, I could spend four hours talking to you about my theories on having a better life, but that’s enough for now, so I’m going to give you a quick rundown of my other promises for 2016…In 2016, I promise to…Follow things and people only when it feels naturalDevelop confidence in myself rather than trying to fit in or follow the rules (that’s work for a lifetime, but it’s really worth a try)Work hard, but have fun doing it — it should never be painfulStop feeling guilty – remember that what matters is doing your best. And you can’t please everyone. And also, because at first this was supposed to be an Editor’s Letter, I promise myself that I’ll make this site better more interesting, more innovative, and more different. This year, I can give my full attention to the blog! You have no idea how happy that makes me.Basically, I want to follow things that feel right and make me happy, and not bother too much with the rest. And on that note, here’s the news (I mean, it left me totally speechless)(for hours)(I still haven’t processed it): Yesterday, Chris asked me to MARRY HIM!!! I said YES!!! 2016 is the year I’m going to get married!!!It’s crazy. It’s amazing. And it’s really proof that with a little confidence in life, anything can happen. I’m working on a huge post to tell you everything about it super soon.Sending you so many kisses and wishing you a fantastic (and a tiny bit cheesy) year.——————————-Nail polish, Tenoverten; Brush, Eve Lom; iPhone case, Garance Doré Goods, Sunglasses, Sun Buddies; Candle, Ladurée; Notebook, Garance Doré Goods; Decoded (book), Jay-Z.Translated by Andrea Perdue
