Ten Things That I Love About Being Older

Oh but first, here are five things that I really hate:

1/ The skin at my elbows
2/ The little lines at the corner of my mouth
3/ The general softening of my body (maybe I should go to the gym)
4/ People calling me madam (I know it’s stupid, can’t help it)
5/ Realizing that sleep, alcohol, sugar, and stress now have immediate consequences

And now for ten things I love:

1/ This incredible desire to free myself from the injunctions of society. Wow, it’s so deep and strong and beautiful.
2/ But also, still being as vain and futile as I used to be when I was twenty—see five things above.
3/ Being a 90s kid.
4/ Knowing what’s truly good. Being around a table with people I love. That’s what’s good.
5/ I love that I’m part of the first generations to be allowed to age. It’s kind of cool to be fifty.
6/ By some miraculous loop of the mind, still thinking that I’ve never looked better. May the illusion keep going forever.
7/ Having so many beauty tools at my disposal. From amazing creams to plastic surgery, it’s a new age for getting older, and I am here for it—no extremes, just doing what feels best.
8/ Women my age and older. I knew they were great, but now that I’m part of the crew, I see it even clearer—there is a vibe with women after fifty, it’s like we have nothing to prove.
9/ Saying no without a speech. Just no.
10/ Finally understanding that peace is not boring. It’s the ultimate luxury.
