The Necessity of Face Massage

Author: Doré
The term "self-care" has been diluted in recent years with its overuse. Get a massage, it's self-care. Have a drink with a friend, it's self-care. Make tea, it's self-care. Take a breath, it's self-care.How do we define self-care? Taking a moment to physically pamper oneself, with a net positive outcome (we think our grandmothers called it grooming). These days, our product routines have been simplified but that doesn't mean we can't take a little extra time to apply them with a decadent facial massage.Still hesitant on this whole "face massage" trend? We broke it down for you below. The benefits, the routines, and even the pro-tools should you want to kick it up a notch.1/ The benefits of facial massage. The benefits are so, so numerous, just listing them makes us want to drop everything and go apply La Crème in circular motions.Facial tissues appear firmer due to exercising the muscles of the face.Friction on the skin causes blood flow to the face and improves overall coloring.Stimulates the lymph channels to help carry away waste (more on that later). With sustained practice, facial massage can even eradicate fine lines. (!!!)2/ Where to start. In your own bathroom. Seriously. There is no need for anything fancy here. You just need your hands, La Crème and some deep breaths.First, do what feels good and right to you, we don’t like to get too caught up in “the right way” and would rather encourage you to find a simple routine you like so you stick to it, because the benefits of facial massage work best when it is repeated. But since you’re asking…. We like to start with small upward strokes on our necks, bringing oxygen and circulation to the face. From there it’s all about the upward and outward motions on our face. We specifically like to concentrate around the orbital bone and any tension we feel between our eyes at our furrow brow. Some like to use their fingertips, but you can also try using your knuckles if you like more pressure.3/ Lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system is a key in purification. It serves the role of a filter, removing waste from our system. So when you hear that massage helps to detoxify the skin, this is why.It consists of a gentle, light massage that provides circulation in your face by delivering oxygen around the skin and pushing waste and toxins out of the lymph nodes. You want to start from the neck and slowly move up your face, using soft, circular, downward motions against your skin to “whisk” away the detritus. Always staring at the center of your face and moving outward and downward. We like to split our facial massage and lymphatic drainage into an AM and PM routine.4/ If you’re into tools and vibrations…Your hands will absolutely do the trick to provide the rest and lift you are looking for, BUT if you've mastered that level of facial massage and want more, here are some of our favorite tools.Jillian Dempsey makes a Gold Sculpting Bar that feels as good as it looks.Lanshin is the one to visit should you want to dive into gua-sha.And if you do want to get fancy, if you are in London, New York or Los Angeles you can always book a slot at FaceGym. Be sure to ask them to show you a before and after photo of your face so your skepticism (and furrow lines) can melt away.
