How To Use An Ice Roller

How to Properly Use an Ice RollerSo now that you’re excited about all of the amazing benefits of ice rolling, you need to figure out how to actually use an ice roller. It’s relatively simple, which is just how we prefer all things skincare.Refresh: What is an ice roller? An ice roller is a tool with a cylindrical element (Le Glaçon’s is stainless steel), that cools in the freezer and is then rolled onto the skin to help reduce puffiness, soothe the skin and tighten it. It’s an easy to use, everyday tool that allows you to do an icy facial massage without any mess in just a few minutes. How to use an ice roller: step by step- First, ice your tool. Put it in the freezer (or fridge!) for at least 15 minutes to allow it to get cold enough. It’s important that your ice roller isn’t wet when you put it in the freezer, otherwise any liquid will freeze and create ice crystals which can stick to the skin and cause ice burn. So please make sure it’s fully dry before freezing! Once you take it out, we always recommend testing on your arm to make sure it’s not too cold for your face!- Before you use the ice roller, make sure you cleanse your skin to remove any dirt or make up. You can use Le Cleanser for a deep clean or a simple swipe of La Micellaire.- You can now begin to roll your face. When using a face ice roller, make sure to roll it in an upwards motion, starting from the center of your face, moving outwards and upwards. You can start at the chin and jaw line, rolling up towards the temples, then moving across the cheeks, starting at the center of the face near the nose again out and up towards the temples. Then under the eyes, starting at the inner corner of the under eye moving to the outer eye, and the moving onto the forehead where you can start in the center at the middle of the brow, rolling up while moving across the forehead. You can also roll across the forehead horizontally.- You can concentrate on specific areas of the face, like around the lips or under the eyes which are prone to puffiness. Be extra gentle when rolling around the sensitive skin of the eyes. We wouldn’t recommend rolling over the eyelid.- When you’ve finished the face, then use the roller to go down the side of your neck just below the ear. Use a downwards motion to help drain the lymph.- Avoid of rolling over any super sensitive area, like acne or open wounds.- You should look to roll for max 10-15 minutes tops.- When you’re done ice rolling be sure to clean your ice roller and let it dry before storing it either in your medicine cabinet or back in the freezer. If you’re using Le Glaçon, you can re-cover your ice roller with the anti-microbial cover. How often should you use an ice roller? When should you use an ice roller in your skincare routine and how often? Well it’s important not to overdo it, which can cause irritation and redness (exactly what we’re trying to get rid of!). Some people use an ice roller both AM and PM but the frequency depends on your skin type, and personal preference. If you have sensitive skin that’s prone to irritation, start with using an ice roller once a day to help calm and revitalize the skin.If you have normal skin, you can get away with using the roller every other day if every day feels like too much. Even aim for three times a week to get started with de-puffing and tightening the skin. For combination to oily skin, you can use the ice roller as needed, when you’re experiencing puffiness or redness. And for dry skin, while it can be super beneficial to use an ice roller, be careful not to do it as you want to be mindful not to dehydrate the skin. Start with a couple of times a week and increase from there based on your skin’s response. For all skin types it’s best to start at a lower frequency and increase use as needed to make sure there’s no irritation or discomfort. When to ice roll your face? There are often questions around do you ice roll before or after skincare? It’s our recommendation to cleanse, roll and then moisturize. If you’re looking for a quick pick me up, it’s important to always cleanse your skin first, but no need to reapply products if you’re doing a mid-day roll (although always good to reapply SPF!). Some people like to use an oil or a serum before you roll which works, but make sure to apply your moisturizer after.Ice Rolling Do’s and Don’ts- Do use the right tools. What’s most important is that your ice roller is easy to keep clean, and isn’t putting actual ice on your face. You need some kind of material buffer so you don’t have ice burn, so materials like surgical steel work perfectly.- Don’t give yourself frostbite. Make sure to test your ice roller on a safe patch of skin to make sure it’s not too cold as to give you frostbite. A brisk chill is definitely refreshing, but you don’t want to burn your skin!- Do start at the jaw and work your way up. Upwards and outwards is the rule of thumb with any facial massaging to support lymphatic drainage.- Don’t overdo it. Ice rolling is meant to be done as a simple self-care moment, so don’t go crazy if you miss a day or two.- Do use the ice roller as part of a routine that works for your lifestyle. Ice rolling is meant to be a pick me up on days when you need a little wake up or some extra self-care. And it works best when incorporated into a consistent routine with your cleanser and moisturizer. When You Shouldn’t Use an Ice RollerThere are a few exceptions for when you should skip face ice rolling:- If you’re incredibly sensitive to cold. Which is the case for some people. If so, then ice rolling may not be for you!- If you’ve gotten fillers or botox, it’s best to hold off on the ice rolling for a couple of weeks to be sure you’re not pushing anything around as it settles.- If you have any open cuts or wounds, or an active breakout. It’s important to make sure you’ve given any cuts or breakouts proper time to heal. You don’t want to push acne bacteria around the skin, and if healing tissue gets shifted around while it’s healing, it can be counter-productive to the healing process.
